Growth hormone (GH) and its downstream mediator IGF-1 are central to growth, tissue repair and metabolism. In Thailand, interest in GH and IGF-1 spans from pediatric endocrinology to adult metabolic and longevity discussions.
This section provides an educational overview of GH biology and IGF-1–related physiology.
What Is Growth Hormone?
Growth hormone is secreted by the anterior pituitary and:
- Stimulates IGF-1 production in the liver and other tissues
- Promotes protein synthesis and muscle growth
- Enhances lipolysis (fat breakdown)
- Influences glucose metabolism
Secretion is pulsatile and highest during deep sleep.
IGF-1: The Main Mediator
Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1):
- Mediates many of GH’s anabolic effects
- Supports bone density and linear growth
- Influences muscle and connective tissue
- Interacts with insulin signaling pathways
In Thailand, IGF-1 testing is available at many private hospitals for both diagnostic and monitoring purposes.
